Run Amok
Big Government and Over-Regulation
The Founding Fathers believed that people should be elected to public office, serve for a few years, and then return to their private professional lives. Today, we have a president who has held public office longer than most Americans have been alive. But he is not alone, many politicians make it a career serving in the House, then the Senate, and moving on to other positions in the government. While professional experience often improves decision-making, it doesn’t appear to help in politics.
In his 1981 inaugural address, President Reagan said, “In this present crisis, government is not the solution to our problem; government is the problem.” Back then he was speaking only of the economic issues but such insanity has grown and spread. To help Americans decide what truth is and what is a thoughtcrime, the Biden administration sought to create a Disinformation Governance Board. Nina Jankowicz was nominated to lead the board. This was immediately dubbed an Orwellian Ministry of Truth and was curtailed, although you can still find remnants online. Let’s hope it fades away.
At her Supreme Court confirmation hearing, Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson, a Biden appointee, was asked to define the word “woman.” She said, “I can’t.” More recently, six members of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority brought a case to remove a biological male from their chapter. District Court Judge Alan Johnson, a Reagan appointee, stated in his ruling, that the sorority bylaws don’t define who’s a woman and he was unwilling to do so. I can define it for both Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson and Judge Johnson. A woman is an adult human female. I could delve into the biology of sex differences, but I shouldn’t have to. These judges, and the politicians who support them, are the same ones who allow biological men in women’s bathrooms, locker rooms, athletic contests, and sororities, and run the government school system.
Multitudes within the political elite seem to believe they know best how Americans should live and learn. Democrat, Terry McAuliffe was the Virginia governor from 2014 to 2018. While running for the office again in 2021 he stated, “I don't think parents should be telling schools what they should teach.” He also said he was “not going to let parents come into schools and actually take books out and make their own decisions.” That led to the election of Republican Glenn Youngkin. Why do we allow bureaucrats to decide where our children go to class? School Choice should be an option for all American families. However, the Department of Justice has been investigating parents who protest at school board meetings.
But, it isn’t just ideas and information that the political elites and unelected bureaucrats want to control. For adults, making choices is fundamental to freedom. But the political class is incessantly working to limit your options and make possibilities unavailable or more expensive. The Federal Government began regulating showerheads in 1994. That same year toilets that reliably cleared the bowl with one flush were removed from the market in favor of ever more water-efficient, and less effective, models. Many of you may recall incandescent light bulbs. Those were phased out beginning in 2007.
I can almost hear some people saying, “It’s good to save energy and water.” That’s true. But when did we, as Americans, discuss those changes or vote on them? Now various agencies and governors are talking about regulating gas stoves, and ceiling fans, and banning gas-powered cars.
President Reagan and the Founding Fathers would be shocked at the size, scope, and arbitrary authority of government today and it will continue to grow until we insist that it stops. That is the duty of patriots today.
