A Road to Flops
Virtue Bombs: How Hollywood Got Woke and Lost its Soul
By Christian Toto
Christian Toto is a journalist, conservative movie critic, and editor of the website Hollywood in Toto. So, his view on how wokism has taken hold on the movie industry is insightful and important for those both inside and outside the industry. His book, Virtue Bombs, uses 231 pages to divide the topic into its many parts. Covering Hollywood culture, the woke movies they make, censoring comedians and actors, and how to fight back among, other related topics. Hollywood does affect culture and as Andrew Brietbart is quoted in Virtue Bombs, “politics is downstream from culture.”
The book is full of great quotes. Like “Hollywood has a great moral compass,” Harvey Weinstein. Or from the book author himself about the Oscars, “The dull, self-important showcase fails the one task it’s meant to achieve: sell us on loving movies.”
Virtue Bombs makes the case that wokism is a road to flops as it lists shows and movies that fail by going woke. The Macgyver reboot has a BLM episode and is canceled shortly after, Bird of Prey is a superhero movie that flopped, The Oscars have lost ratings and so did an all-female Ghostbusters fail. It also covers how social media mobs pressure celebrities to go woke. Along the way, it covers how people stand for stupid things like Natalie Portman advocating to defund the police but is silent when asked if this has caused a rise in crime. As well as how some celebrities, such as Jimmy Fallon and Taylor Swift, who don’t wish to make politics a part of their career are mobbed by woke political spokespeople for a variety of causes.
Virtue Bombs also takes time to show hope and how this culture is beatable. Stating that conservatives should support those doing good and shame those doing bad. The book also gives a list of people fighting the woke culture trend including, The Daily Wire and its fledgling movie service, Gutfeld on Fox News beating the TV networks in the late-night ratings game, and also Nerdrotic, Babyface v. Heel along with Geeks and Gamers on YouTube fighting the trend as well. On the music front Virtue Bombs mentions Tom MacDonald has blasted woke with a number one hit, and Punk veteran Johnny Rotten has been outspoken about fighting the trend.
I strive to stay informed about the entertainment industry so, many of the topics were familiar to me. Still, I found Virtue Bombs an interesting and easy read. If you like Hollywood but find wokism offensive this book will be filled with great quotes and insights that you will find interesting. I recommend Woke Bombs!
