The Soul of the Nation
Since I’m certain to disagree with them, I don’t usually listen to speeches by Democrat politicians. If I need to, I can always find the text online. However, on the first of September President Biden walked out of Independence Hall in Philadelphia and, flanked by Marine guards, delivered what was called, Remarks on the Continued Battle for the Soul of the Nation. When the president speaks about a fight for the very essence of our country I thought I should listen. I wish I had stuck with my practice and looked it up later.
In 2008, President Obama, speaking at a San Francisco fundraiser, stated, “They (Midwesterners) get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.”
In 2016 presidential candidate Hillary Clinton declared you could put half of Donald Trump’s supporters, “into what I call the basket of deplorables…They’re racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamophobic—you name it.” Unfortunately, such name-calling by leaders of the Democrat Party didn’t stop there.
Early in his Soul of the Nation speech, President Biden declared, “Donald Trump and the MAGA Republicans represent an extremism that threatens the very foundations of our republic.” I voted twice for Trump and believe in Make America Great Again. I also fought for this country, serving twenty years in the navy. I’ve always paid my taxes and voted, and I’ve never committed a crime. My last parking ticket was over a decade ago. How am I a threat to the foundations of the republic?
Moments later our president told the nation that, “there is no question that the Republican Party today is dominated, driven, and intimidated by Donald Trump and the MAGA Republicans, and that is a threat to this country.” Democrats control the White House, the Senate, and the House of Representatives. They can pass any law they desire but a man who holds no office and his supporters are a threat to the country? What can Donald Trump and his supporters do but try to convince others to vote for their ideas—isn’t that practicing free speech in a democracy?
President Biden said, “MAGA Republicans do not respect the Constitution. They do not believe in the rule of law. They do not recognize the will of the people.” This assertion from the leader of the party that talks of packing the Supreme Court to get their way is insulting. They are the party that supports defunding the police and emptying the jails while crime spirals to record highs in cities they control. Most Americans, including MAGA Republicans, believe in the rule of law and would like more of it.
President Biden states, “MAGA forces are determined to take this country backwards — backwards to an America where there is no right to choose, no right to privacy, no right to contraception, no right to marry who you love.” Christians, conservatives, and many Republicans fought for nearly fifty years to have a say in abortion laws. They celebrated the Dobbs decision that returned the issue to the states. Again, that is democracy. I’ve never heard Donald Trump or any Republican leader speak in favor of banning contraception or restricting the right to marry who you love. On all these points, Biden simply lied.
Referring to the post-election riot, Biden declares, “They look at the mob that stormed the United States Capitol on January 6th — brutally attacking law enforcement — not as insurrectionists who placed a dagger to the throat of our democracy, but they look at them as patriots.” That was a sad day for America however, calling it an insurrection and a “dagger to the throat of our democracy,” is simply silly. Our nation isn’t so fragile as to be overthrown by a bunch of unarmed rioters. We should punish those who entered the capitol illegally and move forward but, Democrats focus on the day because using it allows them to demonize Donald Trump and millions of conservative Americans.
We should no longer fool ourselves. As commentator and radio host Dan Bongino has stated many times, “Conservatives think liberals are people with bad ideas; liberals think conservatives are bad people with ideas.” I would add that liberals, progressives, and most Democrats are willing to lie and ignore the Constitution in their zeal to change the soul of the nation. Conservative patriots need to be on guard.
