YouTube & PragerU
YouTube is a subsidiary of Google which is a subsidiary of Alphabet. These are the same people that brought you Google search, the Chrome browser, and Fitbit. Like other big tech companies, YouTube has made a sport of stifling conservative voices. They permanently banned President Trump, Sebastian Gorka, and Alex Jones. They suspended Rudy Giuliani and One American News Network. They demonetized Steven Crowder’s channel and more than fifty videos by PragerU. The list continues, but I’ve made my point—YouTube is hostile territory.
However, some conservative voices find a way to remain on YouTube and be true to their values. Among those is Dennis Prager, the founder of PragerU. Along with producer Allen Estrin, PragerU began in 2009 as a website making short videos on a variety of conservative-orientated topics. In 2018, BuzzFeed reported that the site had an annual budget of $10 million. They have produced videos on topics ranging from “racism, sexism, income inequality, gun ownership, Islam, immigration, Israel, [and] police brutality.”
Often called a university, PragerU isn’t. Buzzfeed described the platform as “one of the biggest, most influential and yet least understood forces in online media.” Unlike a news channel that responds to the events of the day, PragerU continues to make insightful arguments from a conservative perspective on its own schedule. This has usually kept them out of the media spotlight.
The PragerU videos are posted to their YouTube channel and while it has managed to avoid much of the media glare; YouTube has repeatedly restricted or demonetized Prager videos as potentially mature or having objectionable content, inappropriate for younger audiences. Prager has created a growing playlist of all the videos that have been restricted or demonetized so that viewers can judge for themselves. Two of the restricted videos are embedded on this page. At the time of this posting, the videos could still be viewed by clicking on them.
In an attempt to stop the censoring of its videos, PragerU has filed a lawsuit claiming that Google and YouTube are unlawfully discriminating against Prager and their right to freedom of speech.
Action Tip: The online world is changing and conservatives and Christians can help make that change by supporting the companies that support their values.
Dennis Prager is performing a valuable service for conservatives and our republic with his videos. But, what do you think? Should PragerU move its videos to another site or continue the lawsuit against YouTube? Let us know in the comment section below or use the contact page.
