Facebook & Me
Founded by Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook had a gradual rollout, becoming widely available in 2004. The site now has nearly three billion users and earns revenue by collecting information about each of them. Advertisers can then use that information to better target their ads. Facebook may say the site is free but, users give up personal information to use the platform. TNSTAAFL, there’s no such thing as a free lunch.
As an author and online businessman, I’ve used Facebook, but the site has often frustrated me. They have rejected my advertisements for obscure reasons and then later accepted some. Facebook seems to have a bias against conservatives. They banned President Trump, National Security Advisor, General Michael Flynn, Sidney Powell, a lawyer for Trump, Alex Jones of Infowars, and many more. Facebook has stated that they are not targeting Republicans or conservatives but are responding to a public desire to crack down on extremism and misinformation. Sure, I believe you, Facebook.
There is another option
After many years on Facebook, I started looking for alternatives. Founded in 2012, MeWe has a similar site interface to Facebook, but MeWe takes a more relaxed approach to content moderation and focuses on data privacy. For these reasons, they are often called the “anti-Facebook.” MeWe has proven popular with conservatives in the United States and abroad.
In 2020, during the Chinese Communist Party crackdown on Hong Kong, many users in the city moved from Facebook to MeWe. Many in the city feared growing restraint on free speech after the communist party imposed a new national security law. MeWe was thought to be the better choice.
Businesses want to advertise where people congregate. Online that usually means going with Facebook and its nearly three billion users. I use my Conservative Alternative Facebook page as a means to reach those users.
MeWe has about nine million users. However, for the average social user that number is much less important. I suggest you try to bring family and friends with you and build a community on MeWe.
Action Tip: The online world is changing and conservatives and Christians can help make that change by supporting the companies that support their values.
Are you a MeWe user? What is your impression of the site? How would you compare it with Facebook? Let me know in the comments section below.
